The singular of mice is mouse – so why is the singular of dice not douse?
Although many wrongly call a single unit a dice, it is properly called a die.
Of course, unlike mice and mouse, the word douse has an alternative, unrelated meaning (to throw water on).
However, so do dice (cut into small cubes) and die (expire).
And while we are on this – how come the plural of house is not hice?
