As I understand it, to my American readers, Cinemax is all about “Max After Dark” – when they run SEXY movies. But of course, that would not fly here in Asia.
No. Here, it is HBO’s “beta” channel, showing “B” movies (Jean-Claude Van Dammet, Steven Seagull and the like) and the occasional modern classic.
However last Saturday, things began looking up a bit. The local schedule showed two eps of “How To Make It In America”, an HBO standup concert and “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” – goody.
But sadly, what actually aired was… …well, an e-mail I just sent HBO Asia will explain…
I live in Thailand and my satellite operator is TrueVisions.
And next Saturday, the primetime schedule on your website (cinemaxasia.com) reads as follows; 7:30PM Mad Max, 9:00PM The Knick S202, 10:20PM Jerrod Carmichael (standup) – etc.
But, going by LAST Saturday, what you will ACTUALLY broadcast at 9:00PM is TWO episodes of The Knick – despite TrueVisions having listed two episodes of How To Make It In America (where did they get THAT information from?) – followed by, at 21:55PM, an episode of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver – which IS listed on TrueVisions.
Three things; firstly, you and TrueVisions REALLY need to get your ducks in a row – secondly, you REALLY need to get your website’s primetime schedule CORRECT – and thirdly, as far as LWT John Oliver is concerned; what part of TOPICAL do you not understand??
Last Saturday, you showed EPISODE ONE. LWT John Oliver is TOPICAL political satire and comedy – episode one was originally broadcast on HBO (America and Europe) some NINETEEN MONTHS AGO!
…and there it is. I looked up “How To…” and it turns out to be a five-year-old crash-and-burner from HBO – sixteen eps made. So probably no great loss there.
But LWT John Oliver – NINETEEN MONTHS ago? I mean, SERIOUSLY dude??!
UPDATE!! Cinemax’s new Saturday night comedy bonanza has now gone from deeply screwed – to MELTDOWN.
I received an answer to my e-mail…
Happy New Year and thank you for your email.
We will look into the matter and endeavour to have the schedules updated.
…note that they totally IGNORED my main point (the e-mail looks like a tuned-up “standard letter”) – which was the fact that they were showing NINETEEN MONTH OLD episodes of a TOPICAL comedy show.
I SAY episodes; along with the promised HBO standups, LWT John Oliver has now completely DISAPPEARED from their schedules (and those of my local satellite operator) after just ONE!
And “How To Make It In America” HAS now been totally replaced by “The Knick” – which is crap.
By the way, a word on those standups; of the several scheduled, only two actually aired: one featured Ellen DeGeneres and the other… [I forgot her name and so idly Googled “sex comedienne” – and she occupied the TOP TWO ENTRIES!] …Amy Schumer.
Both sets had a Cinemax “content disclaimer” at the start…
Ellen’s set was ten years old (it was in 4:3) and you could have played it to your grandmother.
While Amy’s was a lot edgier (and far more RECENT; just last year) – but their censor had MISSED half the F-words – and the C-word!
All of which proves that Cinemax – at least, in Asia – is totally… F-ed!
Having promised three hours of top, primetime Saturday night comedy, they have come up with – BUGGER ALL.
