Well, it has happened again.
Some years ago, I heard of the case of an aged, reclusive English bloke who had not paid his rent for some time. Social services visited his flat, but could not get a response. So eventually a cop bashed his door in and found him expired, seated in front of his TV. The set was on, as were the lights on his Christmas tree. Beside him was the Christmas Radio Times.
But this was in August.
And when they looked at the date on his Radio Times, they saw that not only had he been dead since Christmas, but it had been the Christmas of SEVEN YEARS EARLIER.
He would still be there today had his bank account not collapsed.
And now I hear of an American woman – this time, only 44 – who has repeated the trick.
A neighbour (neighbor) had clipped her grass for her, while she had lain dead just yards away – this time, for five years.
The county Medical Examiner said, “Once in a while, we see this.”
Back in the day, people lived from week to week, paying their bills as they went. But now, thanks to the DIRECT DEBIT, a loner’s demise can remain undiscovered for EVER – or at least, for as long as their source of income holds out.
I wonder what the RECORD is…
