A friend of mine had a forebear from antiquity who languished under the moniker Euphemia Staddon Widlake. Wow.
Such unique names do have their uses these days. I would like to locate two friends: David Wright and Andrew Richardson – but a lot of bloody good it is GOOGLING them!
(For the record, the current number of search results you will get is – DW: 72.4 million and AR: 25.6 million).
On the other hand – ESW: ONE!!!
She was born in 1864, in Barnstaple, Devon. My friend assures me SHE IS his ancestor.
Further research showed the name hails from Greece: it means “well spoken” (“euphemism” comes from the same root).
And apparently the name was popular in the Victorian era and often shortened to Effie.
Having a name like Cornelius Eldridge Amner (I just made that combo up, then Googled it: it is NOT TAKEN – the nearest is Gerald Cornelius Eldridge, who has been on Death Row for twenty years – I sure can pick ’em) HAS to be better than those stupid, pretentious MADE-UP names that abound these days, particularly amongst African-Americans. (Not racist – factual).
Some berks even mispronounce mundane names (like Colin Powell) or misspell them – even incorporating PUNCTUATION – like S’Zun (Susan).
M’point is, names like Euphemia are REAL – but being RARE, they STILL make you unique. And EASY TO FIND on the Interweb (which may or may NOT be a good thing, depending on your lifestyle!)
So if you are expecting a happy event – or even a baby – forget James, Mary, Harry, Anne, David, etc. And you do not have to lumber them with “Moon Unit”, “Xenon”, “River”, etc. And for CRISSAKES do NOT start just making crap UP.
Oh, yes – and Brooklyn and Asia are PLACE names.
Even if your surname is Johnson, Brown or Smith, you can STILL make them unique with just TWO names (more than ONE middle name is ALSO pretentious) that are FORENAMES (an old family surname as a middle name is dumb too).
The “T” in Capt James T. Kirk was of course Tiberius, but you do not need to go THAT far.
Just find ones that no-one USES anymore – but which are still COOL. Like Eleanora, Sophronia, Jessamine, Zylphia or Lorena (all REAL girl’s names, I promise you) and if it is a boy – Edmund, Guy, Mordecai or Jasper.
And I have NO copyright on Morpheus, Damien or (see above) Cornelius!
